Why your Scorecard is green and your revenue is flat

A green Scorecard tells you last week went well. It doesn't tell you whether you're on track for the year. Here's how to see the gap.

Most leadership teams running EOS® know the feeling. The Scorecard is green. Rocks are getting done. The Level 10 runs on time and the Issues List keeps getting shorter. And revenue is about where it was last year.

Nothing is broken. That is the problem.

The Scorecard answers a different question

A Scorecard is built to tell you whether last week went the way it should. Five to fifteen weekly numbers, each owned by a seat, each with a goal. When they're green, the machine is running.

The Growth Plan asks something else: are we on track to be where we said we'd be in twelve months, and if not, what has to change? A weekly measurable can be green every week of the year while the company drifts further from the plan, because the goals on the Scorecard were set to keep things running, not to close a gap.

Teams of fixers

Leadership teams are often made of great fixers. Give them an issue and they will identify it, discuss it and solve it. That's why EOS works so well for them. But a Growth Plan rarely shows up as an issue. It shows up as a number that is slightly behind, every month, and never quite urgent enough to make the list.

So the Rocks get picked from the Issues List. They fix real problems. And growth waits.

Three numbers that show the gap

You don't need a new framework to see whether you're on track. You need three things in one place:

  • Actuals against plan. Not against last year, against the plan, month by month.
  • The gap. How far behind or ahead you are, in dollars, and whether it's growing or shrinking.
  • The drivers. The two or three numbers that actually move the gap: price, volume, mix, capacity, close rate. These are usually not on the Scorecard.

When a leadership team can see those three things every month, the conversation changes. Rocks start coming from the gap, not only from the Issues List.

A simple test

At your next quarterly, ask one question before you pick Rocks: "If we finish every Rock on this list, will we be on plan by the end of the year?" If nobody can answer with a number, the plan and the data haven't met yet.

That's the work we do. We take your Growth Plan, align your own data to it, and show your leadership team where you've been and the few things to focus on to hit it. Qualified companies see their Dashboard before they sign anything. Start with the Growth Fit Check.
